A Delicious Long Weekend Indulgence- Watermelon Margaritas

534813_10100686358604377_463595299_nOkay, so you are probably wondering why I am posting on an alcoholic beverage, seeing as this is supposed to be a Health & Beauty blog, and we all know that alcohol is not healthy, nor does it make you beautiful (although you might think you look like a supermodel if you drink enough of it).  But I figured, heck, seeing as we are coming up on a long weekend, and long weekends often involve drinking fun- then we mine as well choose the lesser of two evils and attempt to drink a somewhat (I know it’s a bit of a stretch) healthier beverage than your average super sugary cocktail.

My university roommates and I made this frozen watermelon margarita (to the right of the screen) during our annual reunion last month and I have to say- it’s amazing.  It’s refreshing, light, and the colour is so summery and gorgeous that I just had to blog about it.  We took the original recipe from the PC website, but I have tweaked it below, in order to make it less sugary, and therefore making it (ever so) slightly healthier :)

Beauty Benefit:

So the alcohol portion has no obvious beauty benefits, but the watermelon sure does!  Watermelon is a super hydrator that is jam-packed with water and nutrients to help moisturize your skin and keep it looking beautiful.  It is loaded with Vitamin A (great for preventing acne, blemishes and dry skin) and Vitamin C (you need it for collagen production), Vitamin B1 and B6 (great protectors of the skin’s moisture barrier), as well as other antioxidants such as beta-carotene & lycopene (good for sun protection from the inside out, plus it helps to protect the lipid portion of the skin’s moisture barrier), and copper (helps to stimulate collagen production).   The super high content of water in this fruit, also makes it amazing at keeping your body well hydrated (one of the keys to preventing the dreaded hangover, well that…and not drinking like a fish).  So, all in all, a beautiful addition to your alcoholic bevy.

Here’s how to make it!


3 cups of cubed, seedless watermelon

1/2 cup fresh lime juice (I substituted lime juice for the mixer in the original recipe – as to increase Vitamin C)

1 1/4 cups ice cubes

1 lime, cut into thin wedges

1/4 cup of tequila

1/4 cup of Grand Marnier (or any orange flavoured liqueur)

Kosher salt (for the rim)

Putting It All Together:

  1. Place watermelon cubes in resealable freezer bag; freeze for 2 hours-  although over night might be good too, to ensure that it is super cold.
  2. In blender, combine frozen watermelon cubes, fresh lime juice, tequila, Grand Marnier and ice cubes; blend until smooth.
  3. Rim a pretty glass with the lemon wedge and dip it into the kosher salt (along the edges), pour in drink and serve!
  4. Enjoy with friends:)

This recipe will make enough for about 4 drinks
