A Delicious Long Weekend Indulgence- Watermelon Margaritas

534813_10100686358604377_463595299_nOkay, so you are probably wondering why I am posting on an alcoholic beverage, seeing as this is supposed to be a Health & Beauty blog, and we all know that alcohol is not healthy, nor does it make you beautiful (although you might think you look like a supermodel if you drink enough of it).  But I figured, heck, seeing as we are coming up on a long weekend, and long weekends often involve drinking fun- then we mine as well choose the lesser of two evils and attempt to drink a somewhat (I know it’s a bit of a stretch) healthier beverage than your average super sugary cocktail.

My university roommates and I made this frozen watermelon margarita (to the right of the screen) during our annual reunion last month and I have to say- it’s amazing.  It’s refreshing, light, and the colour is so summery and gorgeous that I just had to blog about it.  We took the original recipe from the PC website, but I have tweaked it below, in order to make it less sugary, and therefore making it (ever so) slightly healthier :)

I decided to start off this post with that awesome quote by Allison Tannis, author of Feed Your Skin, Starve Your Wrinkles (a great read for anyone interested in how food makes you beautiful) because I think it is such an important concept that most of us tend to overlook.  I am always shocked by the amount of money some people will willingly spend on an anti-wrinkle cream in hopes that it will bring them the fountain of youth (…but to no avail), and yet they chow down daily on garbage that comes from a processed source.  Where is the logic? Here is the simple fact.  You are what you eat, and what you eat has a major role in how youthful you look.

Cha Cha Cha Chia! Why You Should Be Chowing Down On The Almighty Chia Seed

IMG_7629The only thing I knew about chia seeds (before I found out they were healthy to consume) was that I used them back in grade 4 to make my beloved Chia Pet grow long and luscious grassy ‘hair’.  In case you didn’t already know, these little seeds do more than just grow chia hair, they are actually an amazing Superfood that have been eaten for centuries by the Indians of the south-west and Mexico.  They were even consumed by Aztec warriors during their long conquests to increase their endurance- and I figure, if chia was good enough for the Aztecs, then chia is probably good enough for me.  You can eat chia seeds in your daily smoothie, baked goods, or even in a glass of water (soaked for about 20 minutes, see below).

The Perfect Addition To Your Morning Ritual- Why Lemon Water Is Amazing

lemonwaterI know a few people who are Holistic Nutritionists and I swear that everyone of those individuals has told me that the first thing they were taught in school, was to drink lemon water- first thing, every morning, every day. 

Before I even started delving into the reasons why adding this drink to my morning ritual was so beneficial,  I went out and bought a bunch of lemons and started drinking the stuff everyday, as I figured it seemed like a pretty simple, cheap (probably less then 25 cents a day, give or take) and beneficial thing to do for my health.   I have personally always loved lemon water- its’ refreshing quality, its’ zestiness (is that even a word?), and its’ tanginess,  were all qualities I had always adored- but once I got into the habit of freshly squeezing half a lemon into a glass of water each and every day- I noticed something…I felt more energized!  I now drink lemon water in either hot or cold water, first thing when I wake up, before I start my day.  Below are just a few of the beautiful reasons why I think fresh lemon juice in your water will rock your world too:

Green is for Gorgeous: Why You Should Be Drinking More Green Tea.

green teaFor me, beauty doesn’t just come from a bottle or a pot of expensive cream.  Oh sure, the latest cream on the market or that great new foundation may provide you with some immediate gratification in the way you look- but in reality, I think that long term, ageless beauty, comes from treating our bodies with a ton of respect, by feeding it the most natural food possible and by drinking antioxidant rich beverages on a daily basis.  Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably well aware that green tea (or any tea for that matter) is a great choice to sip on. There has been so much talk in the media that supports the drinking of green tea in order to prevent a multitude of diseases, including cancer.  But did you also know that drinking Green Tea packs a serious beauty punch as well?  That’s right, you can drink yourself pretty with this tasty beverage.  So before you grab your usual ‘cup of Joe’, consider these reasons for drinking more Green Tea…you mirror will be smiling back at you, I promise :)
