Look No Further Than Your Kitchen For The Quickest, Easiest & Cheapest Exfoliation

If there is one thing (other than SPF protection) that you can do for your skin, to make to keep it looking younger, longer- I truly believe that it has to be- exfoliation.  I am sure most of you know what exfoliation is all about (and I fully intend on writing a whole post dedicated to the benefits of exfoliating your skin), but for now, I will simply say that it is one of the easiest things you can do today to give your skin an instant and noticeable glow and refined texture.

Physical exfoliation is literally the process of taking an abrasive ingredient and rubbing it onto your skin  in order to buff away the surface layer of skin to reveal younger, fresher skin (think about how your feet feel after a day of walking on sand at the beach).  When you exfoliate, you will instantly notice how much softer and smoother your skin is- that’s why people often turn to it in the summer to give them awesome beach-worthy skin, but often neglect the whole process altogether in the winter,  as we tend to curl up and hibernate in sweaters and pants.  Well, I am here to put an end to all this neglect!  Let this post inspire you to let this be your first  fall/winter season  dedicated to pampering your skin at least once a week, because there is nothing better than feeling comfortable in one’s own skin.

Quick Tip: The Easiest Way To Seed A Pomegranate

pomegranate-seeds1As you may have figured from my post earlier this week– I am kind of a major super-fan of the mighty pomegranate.  Not only are they a nutritional powerhouse, but they are simply one the tastiest fruits I have ever eaten.  Unfortunately, pomegranates are also one of the most annoying fruits to eat, as they are a)  tedious to pick through, and b) so juicy that the red stuff often stains my clothing, making me very sad :(

Well, if you find that you are in the same dilemma, let me show you the best way I have found to seed the fruit in about a minute, without getting any stains, anywhere! Yes, the pomegranate Gods have answered my prayers :)

You’re welcome.

POMtastic: They Don’t Call Pomegranates a SuperFood For Nothin’

pomegranates“You need not spend hundreds of dollars at the cosmetic counter; you can avoid wrinkles simply by placing healthy choices on your plate” – Allison Tannis, M.S., R.H.N

I decided to start off this post with that awesome quote by Allison Tannis, author of Feed Your Skin, Starve Your Wrinkles (a great read for anyone interested in how food makes you beautiful) because I think it is such an important concept that most of us tend to overlook.  I am always shocked by the amount of money some people will willingly spend on an anti-wrinkle cream in hopes that it will bring them the fountain of youth (…but to no avail), and yet they chow down daily on garbage that comes from a processed source.  Where is the logic? Here is the simple fact.  You are what you eat, and what you eat has a major role in how youthful you look.

Flawless Skin: My Picks For The Top 3 Drugstore BB Creams

Slide1I realize that envy is not the loveliest virtue to possess, but I must say that nothing makes me more green with envy, then seeing a woman with flawless, perrrfect skin.  Don’t you agree that there is something so quintessentially beautiful about gorgeous skin- its flawless, smooth, wrinkle and blemish-free, glowy, and by the looks of it- makeup-free (Ugghhh, just kill me now). To get a better mental image of the type of skin I am describing, let’s look at a few celebs whose skin we should all covet (and whose dermatologist we should stalk).

Cha Cha Cha Chia! Why You Should Be Chowing Down On The Almighty Chia Seed

IMG_7629The only thing I knew about chia seeds (before I found out they were healthy to consume) was that I used them back in grade 4 to make my beloved Chia Pet grow long and luscious grassy ‘hair’.  In case you didn’t already know, these little seeds do more than just grow chia hair, they are actually an amazing Superfood that have been eaten for centuries by the Indians of the south-west and Mexico.  They were even consumed by Aztec warriors during their long conquests to increase their endurance- and I figure, if chia was good enough for the Aztecs, then chia is probably good enough for me.  You can eat chia seeds in your daily smoothie, baked goods, or even in a glass of water (soaked for about 20 minutes, see below).

What Are We Thinking?? Why Natural Deodorant Is Probably A Better Option Than Antiperspirant

thLet’s get one thing straight.  Pits are not pretty, nor are they a pretty topic to discuss.  But, considering this is a Health & Beauty blog, I figured that I was in my well within my right to write a post on this important topic- that being, switching over to a Natural Deodorant.  Now, I know most of you are probably already conjuring up images of that nightmarish moment when you are in a public place and  suddenly get a wiff of your dreaded underarms…I can only assume that it will be at that moment that you start to re-think reading my blog altogether.  Well, fear not, as I will attempt not to lead you astray.   This post is not meant to scare you, but to make think twice about what ingredients goes into your standard, everyday antiperspirant.  It will then be up to you to weigh the pros and cons, and decide if it is worth taking the risks.

The Perfect Addition To Your Morning Ritual- Why Lemon Water Is Amazing

lemonwaterI know a few people who are Holistic Nutritionists and I swear that everyone of those individuals has told me that the first thing they were taught in school, was to drink lemon water- first thing, every morning, every day.

Before I even started delving into the reasons why adding this drink to my morning ritual was so beneficial,  I went out and bought a bunch of lemons and started drinking the stuff everyday, as I figured it seemed like a pretty simple, cheap (probably less then 25 cents a day, give or take) and beneficial thing to do for my health.   I have personally always loved lemon water- its’ refreshing quality, its’ zestiness (is that even a word?), and its’ tanginess,  were all qualities I had always adored- but once I got into the habit of freshly squeezing half a lemon into a glass of water each and every day- I noticed something…I felt more energized!  I now drink lemon water in either hot or cold water, first thing when I wake up, before I start my day.  Below are just a few of the beautiful reasons why I think fresh lemon juice in your water will rock your world too:

A Cautionary Tale: How To Keep Teeth Healthy and White, Without My Nemesis: Baking Soda

teethOh to have gorgeous pearly whites!  Those glistening, perfect, white chicklet looking things that we are immediately drawn to if they are perfect, and immediately repulsed by if they are bad.  Teeth really are a reflection not only of our oral health- but they can also give away  (gasp!) our age, our grooming practices, and sometimes even more deeply rooted medical issues.

I would like to preface this post by saying that as a young child, I would have done anything to achieve the whitest teeth.  I remember asking my mom how I could get white teeth without using expensive whitening trays and she told me I needn’t look any further than our kitchen cupboard, as baking soda was her whitening tip of choice.  So, for the next year or so I heeded my mom’s advice and began brushing my teeth (sometimes without even the paste, which I cringe about now) by dipping my brush into a bowl of baking soda that took up residence right next to my bathroom sink.  Every day, I watched as my teeth slowly but surely got whiter and brighter.  Yes!  This was like the holy grail of tooth whitening- easy, quick, and cheap, what else could a broke teenager ask for?!

Green is for Gorgeous: Why You Should Be Drinking More Green Tea.

green teaFor me, beauty doesn’t just come from a bottle or a pot of expensive cream.  Oh sure, the latest cream on the market or that great new foundation may provide you with some immediate gratification in the way you look- but in reality, I think that long term, ageless beauty, comes from treating our bodies with a ton of respect, by feeding it the most natural food possible and by drinking antioxidant rich beverages on a daily basis.  Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably well aware that green tea (or any tea for that matter) is a great choice to sip on. There has been so much talk in the media that supports the drinking of green tea in order to prevent a multitude of diseases, including cancer.  But did you also know that drinking Green Tea packs a serious beauty punch as well?  That’s right, you can drink yourself pretty with this tasty beverage.  So before you grab your usual ‘cup of Joe’, consider these reasons for drinking more Green Tea…you mirror will be smiling back at you, I promise :)
