The only thing I knew about chia seeds (before I found out they were healthy to consume) was that I used them back in grade 4 to make my beloved Chia Pet grow long and luscious grassy ‘hair’. In case you didn’t already know, these little seeds do more than just grow chia hair, they are actually an amazing Superfood that have been eaten for centuries by the Indians of the south-west and Mexico. They were even consumed by Aztec warriors during their long conquests to increase their endurance- and I figure, if chia was good enough for the Aztecs, then chia is probably good enough for me. You can eat chia seeds in your daily smoothie, baked goods, or even in a glass of water (soaked for about 20 minutes, see below).
If you are a person with extremely oily skin… you know, the type that has skin which your friends can see their reflection in by 9 am, or if you have more balanced skin and simply want a great, everyday moisturizer that will provide you with light hydration, well today is your lucky day! Andalou Naturals Acai + White Tea Oil-Free Moisturizer, $24 62 ml, is quite simply one of the best all-round facial moisturizers I have ever used. Period.
This is a super quick, easy, and nutritious cauliflower-mash recipe that I created as a substitution for standard mashed potatoes. Although I do adore mashed potatoes, I often find them overly heavy and rich due of the copious amounts of butter and cream which are used in most recipes. This is perfect for those times when all you want is creamy, smooth, comfort food- but without all the heaviness. What’s great about this type of recipe is that it is open to interpretation, so you can add or adjust the flavours depending on your tastes. Please note that I do use a couple sweet potatoes (higher in nutrients than your standard spud) in this recipe, simply as a way to bind the ingredients and make it taste smooth, not chunky. The bulk of the recipe is still organic cauliflower. Make it as a side for dinner and then bring the left-overs for lunch the next day- as this recipe will yield quite a bit.
Let’s get one thing straight. Pits are not pretty, nor are they a pretty topic to discuss. But, considering this is a Health & Beauty blog, I figured that I was in my well within my right to write a post on this important topic- that being, switching over to a Natural Deodorant. Now, I know most of you are probably already conjuring up images of that nightmarish moment when you are in a public place and suddenly get a wiff of your dreaded underarms…I can only assume that it will be at that moment that you start to re-think reading my blog altogether. Well, fear not, as I will attempt not to lead you astray. This post is not meant to scare you, but to make think twice about what ingredients goes into your standard, everyday antiperspirant. It will then be up to you to weigh the pros and cons, and decide if it is worth taking the risks.
My dear friend Lindsay must know me too well. As we were driving up to her cottage for a little R&R, she told me that she had come across an awesome homemade recipe for a Whipped Body Butter, and had brought up the ingredients for us to make it that night. As we took a look at the recipe, we decided that we should tweak it a bit as we were concerned that the solid ingredients wouldn’t quite whip up into the frothy concoction we wanted. So we took inspiration from the recipe (linked above) and below is the version that we created, which left us quite happy :). See, that’s the best thing about making your own products, you can replace, add, or take away ingredients; and often times coming up with great or even better results than the original recipe. Trial and error is all a part of the fun!
I know a few people who are Holistic Nutritionists and I swear that everyone of those individuals has told me that the first thing they were taught in school, was to drink lemon water- first thing, every morning, every day.
Before I even started delving into the reasons why adding this drink to my morning ritual was so beneficial, I went out and bought a bunch of lemons and started drinking the stuff everyday, as I figured it seemed like a pretty simple, cheap (probably less then 25 cents a day, give or take) and beneficial thing to do for my health. I have personally always loved lemon water- its’ refreshing quality, its’ zestiness (is that even a word?), and its’ tanginess, were all qualities I had always adored- but once I got into the habit of freshly squeezing half a lemon into a glass of water each and every day- I noticed something…I felt more energized! I now drink lemon water in either hot or cold water, first thing when I wake up, before I start my day. Below are just a few of the beautiful reasons why I think fresh lemon juice in your water will rock your world too:
Oh to have gorgeous pearly whites! Those glistening, perfect, white chicklet looking things that we are immediately drawn to if they are perfect, and immediately repulsed by if they are bad. Teeth really are a reflection not only of our oral health- but they can also give away (gasp!) our age, our grooming practices, and sometimes even more deeply rooted medical issues.
I would like to preface this post by saying that as a young child, I would have done anything to achieve the whitest teeth. I remember asking my mom how I could get white teeth without using expensive whitening trays and she told me I needn’t look any further than our kitchen cupboard, as baking soda was her whitening tip of choice. So, for the next year or so I heeded my mom’s advice and began brushing my teeth (sometimes without even the paste, which I cringe about now) by dipping my brush into a bowl of baking soda that took up residence right next to my bathroom sink. Every day, I watched as my teeth slowly but surely got whiter and brighter. Yes! This was like the holy grail of tooth whitening- easy, quick, and cheap, what else could a broke teenager ask for?!
Being the DIY type that I am, my creative juices started flowing yesterday after I wrote a post on Cake‘s awesome Hand & Cuticle Buffer, so I decided to attempt to create my very own version. Obviously Cake’s formula smells divine and works like a charm, but heck, I am always looking for an opportunity to have fun and play chemist in my own kitchen.
The version I created is by no means the same as the original (doesn’t look as pretty, doesn’t emulsify like the original), but it does give you a similar (exfoliated and seriously moisturized) effect to your hands and feet, and gets them ready for polish in no time. Best of all, it only requires a few ingredients that you probably already have lying around your house, a few minutes to create, and you can make as much as you want of it for future uses (just be sure to leave it in your fridge to prevent spoilage).
It’s summertime people, which means it is time for you (and I) to get our hands and feet looking great because there is nothing worse that putting on a cute pair of sandals and noticing that your feet are in less than desirable condition. If you are like me, you’ve also probably noticed that caring for your hands and feet are the first (beauty) item that gets pushed to the back burner when life gets busy. Ironically enough as i am writing my post, my hands are unfortunately, yet, again, in this sad predicament. If I was smart (and rich) I would be b-lining it to a salon every week to have my hands and tootsies tended to, but alas, this is only a dream and I am relegated to doing my own mani/pedis when I can find the time. Something I have noticed lately- I constantly find myself reaching for Cake’s one-of-a-kind, fabulous, ahhh-mazing, all-round winning product- Milk Made Hand & Cuticle Buffer , $18, to get the job done, super fast.
For me, beauty doesn’t just come from a bottle or a pot of expensive cream. Oh sure, the latest cream on the market or that great new foundation may provide you with some immediate gratification in the way you look- but in reality, I think that long term, ageless beauty, comes from treating our bodies with a ton of respect, by feeding it the most natural food possible and by drinking antioxidant rich beverages on a daily basis. Unless you have been living under a rock, you are probably well aware that green tea (or any tea for that matter) is a great choice to sip on. There has been so much talk in the media that supports the drinking of green tea in order to prevent a multitude of diseases, including cancer. But did you also know that drinking Green Tea packs a serious beauty punch as well? That’s right, you can drink yourself pretty with this tasty beverage. So before you grab your usual ‘cup of Joe’, consider these reasons for drinking more Green Tea…you mirror will be smiling back at you, I promise :)
